12. Mid-Century Modern Tapered-Leg Nightstand
A classic box-frame nightstand paired with angled mid-century brass-tipped legs adds retro charm, warm wood tones, and functional bedside storage.
- Materials: 3/4-inch walnut or oak veneer plywood, matching edge banding, 4 angled furniture leg mounting plates, 6-inch turned tapered wooden legs with brass ferrules, wood glue, 1.25-inch pocket screws.
- Tools: Circular saw with guide rail (or table saw), edge banding iron and trimmer, pocket hole jig, cordless drill, orbital sander.
- How to Make It:
- Rip plywood into four panels to form an open rectangular carcass (two sides, top, and bottom) with 45-degree mitered corners or simple butt joints.
- Apply heat-activated real-wood edge banding along all exposed front edges using a standard iron; trim excess flush.
- Assemble the box frame using wood glue and pocket holes on the underside.
- Sand the outer veneer carefully with 220-grit paper, taking care not to sand through thin surface veneers.
- Finish with Danish oil, then screw angled metal mounting plates into the bottom corners and screw in the tapered legs.
- Tips & Variations: Install a fixed central shelf to create two open compartments: one for books, and one for a woven charging-cable tray.
