14. Wrapped Rope Mirror Frame
Idea Overview
Standard frameless mirrors often feel cold and industrial. By surrounding a basic circular mirror with multiple concentric rings of raw cotton or jute rope, you transform an inexpensive glass disc into a soft, organic focal piece. The spiraling rope fibers soften wall spaces and complement surrounding wooden furniture.
Materials Needed
- A plain frameless round glass mirror (12–18 inches in diameter)
- Thick natural unbleached cotton or jute rope (3/8 inch thickness)
- A sturdy piece of scrap cardboard or thin plywood for the backer
- Heavy-duty craft glue or hot glue gun
- Picture hanging hardware
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Trace your round mirror onto a sheet of thick cardboard or thin plywood, adding a 3-inch outer border ring, then cut out the circle base.
- Glue the frameless mirror directly in the center of the wood or cardboard base.
- Apply a line of hot glue along the immediate outer edge of the glass mirror.
- Begin wrapping the rope tightly around the edge of the glass, pressing it down into the glue as you go around.
- Continue coiling additional rows of rope outward, gluing each ring snugly against the previous one until the backing board is completely covered.
- Trim the rope end at an angle, tuck it neatly behind the outer ring, and glue it flat.
- Secure a sturdy picture hanger to the center back board to mount the mirror on your wall.
Tips & Variations
- Tip: Keep constant inward pressure on the rope rings while gluing to prevent gaps where the backing board might show through.
- Variation: Alternate between white unbleached cotton rope and dark brown jute rope for a striking two-tone striped border pattern.
