6. Organic Woven Seagrass Floor Basket

Idea Overview

Storage baskets are central to organic room aesthetic, but store-bought woven versions can be surprisingly expensive. This budget version builds an organic woven vessel using natural jute rope or coiled seagrass wrapped around a flexible internal form or cardboard structure. It serves as an ideal planter cover or holder for throw blankets.

Materials Needed

  • Thick natural jute rope (1/2 inch thickness) or seagrass cord
  • A sturdy cardboard box or plastic wastebasket (to act as a form)
  • A high-temp hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Canvas or cotton fabric for lining (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Turn your reference container upside down on a flat work surface.
  2. Begin coiling the thick rope tightly at the center bottom of the container, applying continuous lines of hot glue between each touching coil.
  3. Keep wrapping and gluing the rope in a tight spiral outward to form the flat bottom base of the basket.
  4. Once the base matches the container’s width, begin coiling upwards along the outer side walls of the container form.
  5. Continue wrapping and gluing upward until you reach your desired height.
  6. Carefully slide the inner reference form out from the inside of your newly built rope structure.
  7. Fold the top end of the rope neatly down into the inner rim and glue it securely in place.

Tips & Variations

  • Tip: Keep your glue lines minimal and hidden on the inner side of the rope so no dried hot glue shows on the outer face.
  • Variation: Attach two looped handles made of thick braided twine or salvaged leather belts near the top edge for extra function.
