20. Layered Dried Grass & Grain Floor Vase Arrangement
Idea Overview
Large floor vases filled with tall dried grasses bring height, movement, and natural warmth to empty room corners. Instead of purchasing costly pre-made pampas grass displays, you can forage and dry local ornamental grasses, wheat stalks, and wild oats, arranging them with structured height layers inside an upcycled tall jug or oversized glass vessel.
Materials Needed
- A tall floor vase, ceramic jug, or upcycled large glass carboy
- A mix of dried stems (pampas grass, bunny tails, dried wheat, oats, or fan palms)
- Floral foam or small rocks/sand (to weigh down the vase base)
- Pruning shears
- Unscented hairspray (to reduce shedding)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Fill the bottom third of your tall floor vase with small clean rocks or sand to provide heavy weight stability against tipping.
- Lightly spray dried fluffy grasses (like pampas or wild reed plumes) with unscented hairspray outdoors to lock the fibers and stop shedding.
- Trim your tallest structural stems so they stand roughly 1.5 times the height of your chosen floor vase.
- Place the tallest stems in the center back of the vase.
- Add medium-length stems (such as wheat or bunny tails) around the center to build a full fan shape.
- Fill in the front base of the arrangement with shorter palm spears or low foliage stems to cover the vase opening neatly.
Tips & Variations
- Tip: Keep dried floral arrangements out of humid rooms like small unventilated bathrooms to prevent stems from drooping over time.
- Variation: Wrap natural twine or leather cord around the neck of the floor vase for an added layer of raw material texture.
