13. The Piano Key Coat Rack

13

Old, unsalvageable pianos often contain beautiful materials that deserve to be preserved. By salvaging the wooden keys from an old piano, you can create a whimsical, musical coat rack that adds a playful rhythm to your entryway or mudroom. This project is a wonderful nod to music lovers and acts as an immediate conversation starter for guests entering your home.

To construct this coat rack, mount a selection of black and white piano keys horizontally onto a sturdy wooden backing board. To make the rack functional, install vintage brass hooks directly onto the keys, or arrange the keys in a staggered pattern where some keys pivot outward to act as natural wooden pegs for coats, hats, and bags. The contrasting black and white keys create a striking graphic pattern that brings energy and movement to your walls.
