11. Burlap & Lace Rustic Farmhouse Basket

What This Idea Means

Bringing rustic charm into home organization, the Burlap & Lace Farmhouse Basket blends coarse natural jute burlap with soft white eyelet lace trim and a cotton muslin lining. It works exceptionally well in rustic kitchens, coffee bars, or country-style bathrooms.

What You Need

  • 1/2 yard natural jute burlap fabric
  • 1/2 yard unbleached cotton muslin for lining
  • 1.5 yards white eyelet lace trim (2 inches wide)
  • 1/2 yard extra-firm sew-in canvas stabilizer
  • Fabric glue or sewing machine with heavy needle (size 90/14)

How to Make It

  1. Cut exterior burlap, lining muslin, and stabilizer into 18×12 inch rectangles and 10×8 inch bottom panels.
  2. Baste firm stabilizer to reverse side of burlap pieces to prevent sagging and manage burlap fraying.
  3. Stitch lace trim horizontally across upper portion of burlap exterior panel.
  4. Sew side seams and attach bottom panel to assemble burlap shell.
  5. Sew muslin lining shell, leaving a 4-inch gap in bottom seam.
  6. Join burlap shell and muslin lining right sides together around top edge. Stitch carefully.
  7. Turn right-side out, hand-stitch lining gap, fold top cuff down 2 inches to reveal lace trim over muslin interior.

Tips and Variations

  • Tip: Spray burlap lightly with water starch and press before cutting to minimize shedding and stabilize open weave during sewing.
  • Variation: Stencil black vintage typography or monogram initials onto front burlap panel before assembly.
