20. Linen-Upholstered Shadowbox with Antique Brass Key Pegs
What This Idea Means
Combining heirloom elegance with functional organization, this project replaces standard hooks with authentic antique brass skeleton keys mounted horizontally inside a linen-upholstered shadowbox frame, using the key bits as unique hanging pegs.
How to Make It
- Prepare Shadowbox Frame: Clean a deep wooden shadowbox frame (11×14 inches) and paint it with dark walnut stain or matte black paint.
- Upholster Backer Panel: Wrap the rear backer board with high-grade natural oatmeal linen fabric, stapling it taut on the reverse side.
- Select Vintage Keys: Gather 8 to 10 vintage brass or iron skeleton keys featuring interesting decorative bows and bits.
- Mount Keys Horizontally: Drill small holes through the key bows or use clear epoxy to mount keys horizontally across the linen board, turning the key bits upward to form hooks.
- Reassemble Frame: Place the upholstered key board inside the shadowbox frame, secure rear tabs, and mount on your wall.
Tips & Variations
- Tip: Ensure the key bits point upward at a slight angle so necklace chains do not slide off the end of the key shaft.
- Variation: Use antique brass door keyhole escutcheon plates behind each mounted key for extra historical detail.
