4. Vintage Picture Frame & Hexagonal Wire Mesh Display

What This Idea Means

Combining rustic charm with functional storage, this project replaces glass in an antique or thrifted picture frame with hexagonal brass or chicken wire mesh. Necklaces clip onto the wire grid using small S-hooks or clothespins.

How to Make It

  1. Prep Vintage Frame: Sand and paint an ornate thrifted picture frame with chalk paint, lightly distressing the edges with sandpaper for a vintage feel.
  2. Cut Wire Mesh: Using wire snips, cut a piece of hexagonal brass or galvanized wire mesh slightly smaller than the outer dimensions of the frame back.
  3. Attach Mesh to Rear: Stretch the wire mesh taut across the back opening of the frame, securing it around the inner lip using a heavy-duty staple gun.
  4. Cover Sharp Edges: Place dark felt tape over the stapled wire edges along the back of the frame to protect your wall from scratches.
  5. Add Hooks: Hang small metal S-hooks or mini decorative wooden clothespins onto the mesh wire cells to support necklaces.

Tips & Variations

  • Tip: Wear work gloves when cutting and stretching wire mesh to protect your hands from sharp wire ends.
  • Variation: Paint the wire mesh with metallic gold spray paint before attaching it to match gold jewelry hardware.
