Idea Overview & What It Means

Combining delicate textile patterns with vintage distressing, this project uses real lace fabric pressed into clay, followed by chalky paint layers that are lightly sanded back to reveal intricate vintage detailing.

Materials Needed

  • Glass jar
  • Air-dry clay
  • Strip of vintage lace fabric
  • Rolling pin
  • Soft pink or vintage cream chalk paint
  • Sandpaper (medium-fine)
  • Clear matte sealer

How to Make It

  1. Roll out air-dry clay sheet to 1/8-inch thickness.
  2. Place lace fabric over the clay sheet and roll firmly to press the lace texture into the surface.
  3. Peel away lace to expose detailed textile imprints.
  4. Glue the clay sheet onto the glass jar, trimming excess along seams.
  5. Allow clay to cure completely.
  6. Paint over the entire jar with chalk paint.
  7. Once paint is dry, gently sand over raised lace pattern areas to reveal raw clay underneath for a shabby-chic vintage look.
  8. Seal with matte spray.

Tips & Variations

  • Use crocheted doilies instead of lace strips for larger, central floral mandala textures.
  • Layer a dark grey clay base with a white paint topcoat for high-contrast vintage elegance.
