Idea Overview & What It Means

This design captures the weathered charm of antique Greek or Italian garden vessels. Layering joint compound, crushed eggshells or coarse sand, and multiple washes of chalk paint produces an authentic aged stone appearance.

Materials Needed

  • Large wide-mouth glass jar or vase
  • Joint compound
  • Crushed dry eggshells or coarse mineral sand
  • White, warm grey, and dark brown chalk paint
  • Wax brush and dark antiquing wax

How to Make It

  1. Coat the exterior of the jar with joint compound mixed with crushed eggshells to build a rough base.
  2. Use a stiff sponge to pat the surface, creating natural pits and stone-like imperfections.
  3. Let the texture dry completely for 24 hours.
  4. Paint the entire surface with a base coat of warm grey chalk paint.
  5. Mix a thin wash of dark brown paint with water and brush it into deep crevices, wiping away excess with a damp cloth.
  6. Lightly dry-brush white chalk paint over high points to highlight the texture.
  7. Apply a thin layer of dark antiquing wax in low areas to complete the aged patina.
