3. Fluted Grooved Ceramic-Look Jar
Idea Overview & What It Means
Fluted and ribbed textures bring a sophisticated architectural look to home accents. This project uses thin wooden dowels or rolled clay coils wrapped vertically around a jar, coated with baking soda paint to mimic high-end designer stoneware.
Materials Needed
- Straight-sided cylinder glass jar
- Air-dry clay or half-round wooden dowel strips
- Heavy-duty craft adhesive
- Off-white or warm grey acrylic paint
- Baking soda
- Matte varnish

How to Make It
- Measure the height of the cylinder jar and cut clay coils or half-round dowels to match.
- Glue the vertical strips side-by-side around the entire perimeter of the jar, ensuring minimal gaps.
- Smooth top and bottom joints with a small amount of wet clay.
- Mix equal parts off-white acrylic paint and baking soda until a thick, chalky paste forms.
- Brush the textured paint mixture vertically along the grooves, ensuring complete coverage.
- Allow the first coat to dry, then apply a second layer to fill in subtle seams.
- Protect with a matte finish spray.
Tips & Variations
- Space the vertical ribs 1/2 inch apart instead of touching for a lighter, modern line pattern.
- Use charcoal or matte black paint for a sleek, contemporary contrast.
